Preserving Our Aerospace
Valley
Due to cuts in federal spending on defense and
space, there was a draconian downsizing in the
aerospace industry in the late eighties to early
nineties. In 1988, 392,700 people were employed
in the five counties comprising the Greater Los
Angeles Region (including Ventura County). This
number had dropped to 212,100 workers by 1992.
With the final selection of LockheedMartin as
the Joint Strike Fighter Contract (F-35), things
have not looked better for aerospace workers in
the High Desert.
More must be done in Sacramento to ensure that
the F-35 Program work done in California grows
as much as possible and I am committed to ensuring
that. The Aerospace Valley retains a huge advantage
in global aerospace contracting because of the
expertise of the people in the region. Our region
has hundreds of thousands of experienced aerospace
workers, an abundance of manufacturing and testing
facilities, and unmatched research capabilities.
