Supporting the Second
Amendment
I strongly support the Second Amendment right
to keep and bear arms.
Our Founding Fathers meant what they said when
they wrote the Second Amendment and the California
Legislature needs more defenders of the Constitution.
Sacramento is full of career politicians who
will do anything to stay in power and we need
to stay vigilant in defending our rights.
We do not need more laws that restrict law-abiding
citizens from owning guns. We need more laws that
punish criminals who misuse guns to commit their
crimes.
I support real gun control, which is keeping
guns out of the hands of criminals, and locking
them up in prison when they disobey the laws.
In fact, there is an excellent program in Los
Angeles County that does just that, and its called
DISARM. Developing Increased Safety Through Arms
Recovery Management Program (DISARM), is run by
the Los Angeles County Probation Department, in
collaboration with prosecutors and sheriff and
police departments, to effectively enforce compliance
with court-ordered terms of probation prohibiting
the possession of weapons and help remove guns
from the streets. It is designed to target high-risk
offenders, who have, at least, one robbery, or
possession of an illegal firearm or other weapon.
Operating with local prosecutors and law enforcement,
the probation departments are able to aggressively
enforce terms and conditions of probation, remove
guns from the community, and remove probationers
who pose the greatest threat to public safety.
In Los Angeles County, DISARM began in February
2000, and in only its first month of operation
performed 81 searches of high-risk probationers
and recovered 34 weapons (handguns, assault rifles
and shotguns), made 14 arrests, seized 3.5 lbs.
of cocaine, 1 lb. of marijuana, 1 oz. of heroin
and found 19 violations of probation. After eight
months of operation, the program had conducted
probation searches and warrant enforcement which
had resulted in the confiscation of 264 weapons
(primarily guns), illicit drugs and cash valued
at $1.3 million.
This is real gun control and that is what California
should be focusing on at the state level.
