Tax Relief for Working
Californians
Protect the Car Tax Cut
I support protecting the VLF car tax cut, not
increasing what is already an unfair and burdensome
tax on some 30 million California vehicle owners.
The solution for solving a budget deficit is halting
runaway government spending, not taxing hard working
Californians even more.
Encourage Charitable Giving
I support initiatives that promote charitable
giving, and this is clearly the time to encourage
such giving. Specifically, I support legislation
that will provide a tax credit (of up to 50% of
the first $500 for individuals and $1,000 for
married couples) against state income taxes for
contributions to charities.
Additionally, I support legislation to raise
the existing cap on corporate charitable deductions.
Under current law, a corporation can deduct charitable
deductions until their value exceeds 10% of the
company's taxable income. This legislation will
raise the cap to 15% for state income taxes, encouraging
firms to raise their giving to charities that
address human needs.
Making Health Care Affordable for Working
Californians and Senior Citizens
I support the creation of an income tax credit
for Californians who currently pay out-of-pocket
health insurance costs. This proposal will significantly
reduce the burden faced by working Californians
who need to purchase health insurance for themselves
and their families.
I also support reducing the cost of prescription
drugs, a significant burden to California's senior
citizens, and would support legislation to allow
taxpayers a 100% deduction on the cost of prescription
drugs.
Internet Taxes
I support free and open access to the Internet
for all Californians, and would support legislation
to create an Internet Tax Free Zone in California.
This proposal would prevent taxes on the use of
the Internet to transmit or receive messages,
i.e. "e-mail". It would also prevent so-called
"bit taxes" proposed by the United Nations levied
on e-mails and other electronic date sent over
the Internet. The proposal also prevents local
governments from assessing franchise fees in conjunction
with, or as a condition of, approval for a franchise,
license or other "right" to provide a service
or sell products.
